Customer Rating: Summary: An underrated gem Comment: Like most kid's in England during 1960's we were really spoiled when it came to great music. I however have to conceded that America produced so many groups who defined new genres. Thus it was with Chicago who intially were described as a "jazz rock" outfit. However this was only one of their styles. Listen to the album and you will hear jazz/rock/avant guard and yes political stuff as well. I remember hearing the single, "Does anybody know what time it is?" on UK Radio programme called Emperor Roscoes round table and noting that the reviewers just did not know what to make of it. They thought it was two separate tracks !! when the piano introduction suddenly switched to the main tune. Essentially this album is a tour de force of musical styles. Intellectual and Political/Experimental/Pop/Jazz/Beatles Homage etc. My favourites are Beginnings, Introduction and Does anybody know what time it is?,I'm a man,Listen. This album is up there with Pet Sounds and any of the Beatles best, possible the best for creativity and energy. I was lucky I listened to it when I was only 16 years old and free of musical prejudice. Buy it before your ears fail you..
Customer Rating: Summary: Chicago II the way it was meant to be heard... Comment: For those of you familiar with the phrases 8-track tape, vinyl record, and cassette tape, this 5.1 surround sound mix is finally the way one of Chicago's best efforts was meant to be heard. The clarity and separation between the instruments and voices is like hearing it for the first time again. Although this isn't the best 5.1 DVD-A in my collection, it is well worth the price for any Chicago fan. Definitive good sounds from one of the best jazz/rock acts of all time.
Customer Rating: Summary: A great album that sounds awful... Comment: This was one of my favourite records growing up as a kid and I wore my father's vinyl out. Needless to say that I know the album inside and out and I was so excited when Rhino started reissuing the entire Chicago catalogue. II was the one of the last albums I bought as I had already picked up the DVD Audio version of the disc which is flat out INCREDIBLE. Much to my dismay did I then discover that the same care taken to remaster the other Chicago albums was not bestowed upon the CD release of II. I had always thought that, compared to the rest of the band's catalogue, II was not recorded as well or as clearly. The mix always seemed a bit muddy and details would get lost. This was rememdied in the DVD Audio version I purchased wherein I was able to hear things in the recording I had never heard before. I assumed that this remastering process had originated with the CD remaster but this is not the case. If you want to really listen to this album, by all means pick up the DVD Audio version. I even recommend transferring that version down into a CD if you so desire because even though the packaging is as smart as usual the audio does not hold up.
Customer Rating: Summary: Classic Chicago album. Comment: Okay...I gave it 5 stars. It deserves 4.5, but with early Chicago, I'll err on the side of upgrading it. This has some great hits (25 or 6 to 4, Make Me Smile, Color My World). At this stage, however, the band was very much an albums band, not a singles band. There are some incredible parts to this album. The best thing about this album is 10 to 20 minute song-suites a la classical music. There are about 3 of those suites on this album. Those suites run the gauntlet from jazz to classical to hard acid 1960s rock a la Woodstock. The worst moments are where some of the swinging 60s sound a little dated...a bit like those transitions in the Austin Powers movies. Especially "Fancy Colors." There are about 5 clunkers, and some of the lyrics are simplistic. That said, this is a double album...and there is far more than 1 album's worth of 5 star stuff here. Don't let any of the negative comments turn you off. Jump in...the clunkers aren't that awful, and the great stuff is totally worth the price of admission.
Customer Rating: Summary: Chicago II Comment: This album/CD was along with the original Chicago Transit Authority work the very best of CHICAGO. The music will transcend not only decades but perhaps many many decades to come!
