Summary: amazing dinosaur book!!
Comment: I was astonished to see how complex the pop-ups in this book were. They go on and on....I went back and bought 2 more copies for my nephews! Our kids couldn't put this book down.

Summary: Fascinating book to read to a child.
Comment: I was given this book by my grandson, aged 17 months, in the hopes that I would read it to him, and work the wonderful pop ups. I will certainly do that. I have never seen a better book to encourage adults to read to children. The pop ups are delicate, yet work very well. The text is not compelling, but interesting enough and younger children will be more interested in the pop ups. This is NOT a book to hand over to a very young child to read on her own, unless that child is impossibly careful. As the child grows up (10 or 12 years, at least) she can enjoy it on her own (Well, judging from other reviews, it is possible for younger children to keep this book in one piece. Good, they will love it). I will be looking for other work by these authors.

Summary: Stunning Book on Dinosaurs
Comment: "This beautifully illustrated book would have been called a 'pop-up' book in the past, but this one is so beautifully done that Sabuda and Reinhart are being called 'paper engineers' for their stunning work. The book, which features six spreads of three-dimensional dinosaurs accompanied by colorful, descriptive text, is being hailed as a 'triumph of paper technology.' A slight caveat should be noted by librarians: Although this book is on the current Texas Bluebonnet Master Reading List and the American Library Association's Notable Children's Books List, this book will not stand up to repeated library circulations. However, it could be used in-house, for storytime, or displayed and shown to young readers as an example of just how beautiful and exciting a book can be!" (review by South Texas Library System)

Summary: You have to see it to believe it!
Comment: This is not your father's pop-up book! My son received this as a gift, but all of us in the family have been through it before he's had a chance, and we are in complete awe. I could not believe that art like this is even possible. Oh, and I learned something about dinosaurs too. I think the last time I was interested in dinosaurs, some of the theories and discoveries were quite different.

You do have to watch out, with enthusiastic children, that they learn to be gentle with the pages and especially the little sub-pages that are tucked into little corner pockets. Our book has survived a 6-year-old's browsing (after a bit of preparation)

The pop-ups don't just offer a third dimension, many of them follow an action, such as snapping or attacking or eating, while you open the page. A good way to keep the book from over-opening is to read it on a table or desk, since it seems pretty stable when open a full 180 degrees, but there will be some angle beyond that - at which the pop-ups could be damaged.

Summary: Great book for Dinosaur fans!
Comment: My kids (7 & 5) received this book for Christmas and just love it! It's one that they continue to pick up and look through almost daily. The details in the book are incredible! There are also little mini books on each page with even more dino facts. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with children interestd in dinosaurs.

Editorial Reviews:

From renowned pop-up masters Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart comes an awe-inspiring tribute to the world's most beloved extinct animals and their 180-million-year reign on our planet.

Open this book and a massive T. REX springs out, flashing a startling jawful of jagged teeth. Turn the next spread and a ravishing raptor unfurls and appears to fly off the edge of the page. Inside the amazing ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS are "shield bearers" in full-body armor, creatures with frilly headgear, and weighty, long-necked giants. There are even amusing tidbits on the history of paleontology itself — like a pop-up version of a Victorian New Year's dinner in the belly of a dinosaur model, or a pair of scientists locked in a literal tug-of-war over bones.

Full of fascinating facts and lighthearted good humor, this breathtaking book includes fascinating, up-to-the-minute information about popular dinosaurs as well as many lesser-known varieties. With each of six spreads featuring one spectacular, large pop-up as well as booklets of smaller pop-ups and text, ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS is a magnificent display of paper engineering and creativity — an astonishing book that will be read, admired, and treasured forever.
