Customer Rating: Summary: Great Singing, great songs Comment: Man - they key to why this was so successful in the 70s was the songwriting mostly by Bob Dorough, Lynn Ahrens and George Newall- a little soul, some funk, some rhodes piano, and some boogie woogie and you've got great songs with real bridges, chord changes and unforgettable melodies...each packed into 3 minutes.
Then there is the singing. Of course, everyone can recognize Bob Dorough, who is really the chief voice of the series and should get a lot of credit for a gee-whiz and accessible tone of voice and some very clever songwriting.
Other notable voices: the bluesy conjunction juntion singer Jack Sheldon -- a better voice than almost 99% of what you hear in conteporary blues these days; also, Blossom Dearie, who I wish did more. (Her "Figure Eight" melody, so delcate, which busts into a great uptempo bridge, is just lovely. And of course, she also does a kind of cute soft-spoken Olive Oyl voicing on the song about adjectives!) Then they get some good work from Lynn, and even the Tokens (The Lion Sleeps Tonight) and Dave Frishberg, the great jazz satire singer.
The animation is witty as well, with all kinds of visual puns, quick throwaway jokes and kid-frendly action and color and concept.
No wonder I still remember the tunes like it was yesterday, and when daddy showed it to his kids they sat enraptured and then lept up and said "daddy - I'm skating a figure eight too!" ...So cute, and they're only four.
Really, the level of intelligence for these videos is about 7 to 10 cause they get to third grade topics, but kids younger than that will pick it up quick too.
Thanks Bob!!

Customer Rating: Summary: It's great even if you don't know the original series... Comment: This was recommended to me after my wife remembered Conjunction Junction and other songs. It's great value too. 2 DVDs and a lot of fun. My kids really like it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Schoolhouse Rock! still ROCKS! Comment: In, my forties, I still use these great songs of the 70's to remember and teach my own children. I can't imagine anything ever taking the place of Schoolhouse Rock!
Customer Rating: Summary: Schoolhouse Rocks Really Rocks! Comment: I remember this from Saturday mornings when I was a kid and missed those little songs and wanted my kids to hear them. They are both under ten year of age and they LOVE Schoolhouse Rock. We also homeschool and they love learning through music. What a way to learn about that Bill on Capitol Hill!

It's a good bet that any American kid growing up in the '70s or '80s learned some elementary lesson from the seminal musical series Schoolhouse Rock!. Airing from 1973 to 1984 (and often revived), the ABC Saturday morning shorts effortlessly introduced kids to grammar, science, multiplication, money, and American history--three minutes at a time. In one smart, comprehensive 2-disc set, all 46 songs and plenty of extras are collected. The four creators developed the series slowly, a welcome diversion from their advertising agency jobs, and ended up taking home four Emmys over the years. The background material includes 10 audio commentaries and a making-of feature for the new song, "I'm Gonna Send Your Vote to College." The DVD subtitle option is a great bonus for those who need to know every word from such favorites as "Three Is a Magic Number," "Interjections," "I'm Just a Bill," and "Conjunction Junction." (Ages 3 and older) --Doug Thomas
