Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Comment: This was an excellent movie and very well done! The casting was perfect!
Customer Rating: Summary: I enjoyed this film Comment: I've seen it three times and enjoyed it each time. The film plays out more like a romance with some misunderstandings, funny characters and a plot twist. The BOOK, however, has real genius, wit, irony and insight, all of which are dulled in the film due to the overriding need to make the film 'romantic', which, in fact, the book is NOT. All in all a very nice film, beautifully filmed. Take the film for its intent, but please dont confuse it with the genius of Austen.
Customer Rating: Summary: Perfectly Wonderful Film!!! Comment: After being hounded for many years by my friend to watch this movie , I gave in. One day on a whim I bought the film and have been hooked ever since! I have watched this movie so many times that I'm surprised the dvd hasn't worn out!
As a viewer I always know what each character is feeling without them having to say a word thanks to the superb acting. There are no gaps in the story and is all flows together nicely. A truly beautiful love story. I've never read any of Jane Austen's books but I love the movie adaptations of them. The color quality is poor at times but I'm so engrossed in the story that I only noticed the first time I watched it. I Love this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!! A must own for any lover of romantic movies and romantic period pieces.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Thinking Woman's Heartthrob Comment: Girl meets both good guy and bad guy.
Bad guy turns worse.
Showdown.
Good guy gets girl.
This, in short, is the story but of course I'm joking - Jane Austen's laconic wit and the delightful lightness of her writing are justly famed and have lost nothing of their charm and entertaining quality in two hundred years. As with all of her books, they are very well worth reading because of her wonderful ironic comments that usually fall by the wayside in dramatisations, even the best ones. I feel that this TV production, too, would have benefitted from an occasional background narrator giving us at least the funniest of Austen's remarks and observations about her characters. But all in all, that is a minor point: This "Pride and Prejudice" is a gem, every single actor is fantastic, Jennifer Ehle does justice to Elizabeth's vivacity and wit, on top of being truly beautiful and having a lovely and mischievous smile (funny that the very same actress all but ruined "Possession" for me but that is a different story). Colin Firth is simply perfect as the brooding dark horse who turns out to be such a diamond in the rough (if you permit the cheap metaphor). He is, in short, the thinking woman's heartthrob and that alone should be reason enough to watch this DVD. Afterwards, you'll want to read the book, too. I could think of no better combination, other than maybe Darcy and Elizabeth themselves.
Customer Rating: Summary: The BEST Movie Ever Made Comment: This A&E/BBC miniseries is nothing short of a masterpiece. I bought it 5 years ago and I still enjoy watching it. I own every version of P&P and this is by far the best. Out of all the movies I have seen in my lifetime, this is my favorite. The locations are absolutely gorgeous and the costumes are historically correct. The architecture and the gardens are breathtaking. It makes one feel as though they've walked into 19th century England. If you are a fan of the Regency Era, Jane Austin, or just enjoy historically set movies, this is a MUST see. If you're not, you will be after seeing this movie.

Jane Austen's classic novel of 1813, Pride and Prejudice, still wins the hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting. The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be beneath him, and Elizabeth, who upon being insulted at a dance by the aloof Darcy refuses to associate with him in any manner. Austen evokes incredible tension with the wit and flirtation of the two characters, and director Simon Langton (who also directed Upstairs Downstairs) successfully translates the repartee and conflict in this six-hour miniseries. Dialogue, for the most part, is painstakingly replicated, except when fleshing out and smoothing for modern sensibilities was necessary. Darcy, for instance, is drawn out, giving his personality significantly more depth. The acting sweeps you away to Regency England: Jennifer Ehle (of Wilde) is convincing as the obstinate Elizabeth, who, despite her mother's attempts to marry her off, spurs the attentions of Darcy. And Colin Firth (of The English Patient) will have women everywhere longing for a Mr. Darcy of their own. For those who have been on an Austen binge--enjoying such excellent adaptations as Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion--this miniseries will round out the ultimate Austen video library. For those new to these romantic period pieces, this version of Pride and Prejudice will have you hooked and longing for more. One caveat, however: plan to watch it in an entire day, because very few have the self-control to not watch all six hours in a single sitting. --Jenny Brown
