Summary: Sorry But......
Comment: NO! I don't think this is a wonderful recording. Yes they are beautiful melodies but this is not how they were written. This is the same as taking beautiful natural fruits of the earth and turning them into something so processed that it takes away from the mother earth rather than shows her splendor. There are many beautiful melodies written for the violin by composers (not by Hollywood style arrangers). Showing off a beautiful Stradivari violin this way is like degrading a beautiful person into being a slave for some petty whim of an unfortunate insecure person.

Summary: Beautiful Playing
Comment:
I borrowed this CD from the library, and it is phenomenal! I usually don't recemmend Joshua Bell CDs that much, but this CD has absolutely gorgeous playing.
Please note that these CDs were not mean't to be played on the violin. Some were mean't for voice, otheres for piano like the Chopin piece, and many other instruments. Joshua does an excellent job of putting the feel of the music, and adding a lot of his feelings to the piece. No, the pieces are not cheesy, they are among the most beautiful pieces played on the earth. My favorite piece would be the Puccini, the first track on this CD. The melody is truly beautiful.
The orchestra also does a nice job of accompanying the soloist, led by the famous Sir Neville Mariner and the academy of Saint Martin of the fields.
If any of you just want to listen to relaxing, beautiful violin music, THIS is the CD you should all get.

Summary: Pretty good..
Comment: There's nothing wrong with the performance of this young and talented musician, but the song selections doesn't let him to sparks more of his talent with his violin. His violin play was good, but with better songs to play, it will be great.
However, here are the best songs from the album:

O Mio Babbino Caro - this song is great. very relaxing.

The Swan - will probably make you feel like you are out on a relaxing evening trip on your small boat. Slowly paddling while enjoying the beautiful scenery that surrounds you. This song caught my attention first than any other songs!

The Nocturne - We already know how great this song is with Piano as the instrument. Now,you can hear the violin version of it,which is good, too.

Other songs like The Song My Mother Taught Me, was also good.. It was an overall an-OK album. Not the kind of album where can hear it over and over again.. just one round and stop..maybe next time you'll listen to it again for another round.
And if you have your very last dollars to spend for a really good album...let's just say it's better off if you save it for other albums that you really really need to have..

Summary: Pristine Bell
Comment: This collection of classic string pieces finds Joshua Bell at his best. It is a very good collection of well-known and not-so-well-known pieces. It is very soothing to the savage beast in all of us.

Editorial Reviews:

Every track on this CD contains a beautiful melody, many of them easily recognizable, all of them exuding tranquility. "O mio babbino caro" from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi opens the disc, with Bell delicately accompanied by a harp and spinning the long melody with great sensitivity. Bellini's "Casta diva" from Norma lives up to its reputation as the epitome of bel canto in Bell's hands; his violin sings. The middle movement of Mozart's 21st Piano Concerto takes well to the violin, and Debussy's "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is played with great warmth and sensuality. It would be easy to turn a recital like this into treacle, but Bell is wise enough to realize that the music is already sweet enough and he plays with great reserve and a minimum of sentimental slides. The light accompaniments always support, with woodwinds prominent but used with grace. This CD, in short, is a beauty: a fine gift, a lovely mood setter. --Robert Levine
