Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful Grill for Steaks and Burgers Comment: A great little grill! Though I grew up with weber, kettle type grills, and even tried a trash-picked gas grill, I have never used a grill that cooks so consistently well.
I use mine with hardwood charcoal -- this gets the temperature hot, fast. As soon as the charcoal is lit up I spread the coals outward, drop the grill on top (on the high side of the legs), and let it warm up for a couple minutes. Once the cast iron is warmed up the heat radiates evenly across the cooking surface. To check the temp, I hold my hand 4 inches over the top of the grill -- if I can hold it there for more than a couple seconds, it is not hot enough. Without adding charcoal, I usually have just enough time to do two batches on the grill.
For steak, I leave the meat on for four minutes each side. When I pull it off, it has a nice crispy crust, and a perfect pink inside. When I cook burgers, I leave them on five minutes each side. And, chicken, I'll take a boneless, skinless chicken breast and pound it flat with a fry pan before tossing it onto the grill (this prevents the common problem of dry on the thin end and too pink on the thick end). Four minutes each side, and when the milky juice flows out when pricked with a fork, you know that it is perfect and juicy. I cook fish in a similar fashion. A little flavor tip: Some coarse kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper added to your meat before cooking is usually all you need to have excellent results.
Now, for roasting or smoking, this is not the product for you. Since there is not a lid it would be impossible to cook a whole chicken, for instance. Buy a weber for that. But a weber will never acheive the kind of perfect steaks and burgers that you get from one of these.
We have had our grill for three years now. It has lived outide our home the entire time in all kinds of weather - rain, snow, ice, or sun. And I was grilling in all conditions. I have performed absolutely no maintenance -- never oiled it, never cleaned the ashes. It seams perfectly happy in this state of useful neglect.
If you want a great charcoal grill, this is what you want.
Customer Rating: Summary: The manufacturer could do better Comment: Update 2: Grill quality
I used it and it's great. It doesn't have any bells and whisles but it's compact and great for both meats and vegetables.
As another reviewer noted, I wished the grill surface had a lip so the vegies or other food don't just roll out of the grill.
I'm very happy with it. This baby will get a lot of use.
Update:
They finally shipped the broken part and gave me the shipping number.
With all the crooks in the webb this manufacturer needs to realize that good information is priceless.
I did get a replacment for the broken part free of charge ut I was given the run-around about when this would ship.
I understand that CS (customer Service) people sometimes don't have all the details, but it shouldn't be that way.
This review is for "Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned Sportsman's Charcoal Grill"
I had to clarify first that i have not had a chance to use this grill yet.
When I first received the grill I discovered that part of it was broken (Fire Bowl); so much for cast iron. I contacted Logic Mfg. to get a replacment part on March 27, 2006. The CS lady was great. She said my part would ship on Friday, March 31, 2006.
I called Friday March 31, 2006 to get a tracking number and was told that since it was shipping that day, they wouldn't have a tracking number till Monday, April 3, 2006.
I called Monday, April 3 only to be told that the part is out of stock and it may be in Friday, April 7.
I called Friday, April 7 and was told my part was in stock and it would ship that day. My tracking number would be available Monday, April 10.
I called today, Monday April 10 and was told that the part has not been in stock in a few weeks and they have no idea when it would ship.
I am upset. If I try to return it would cost me $40 jut to ship it back.
I am now looking for contact information for the higher ups in the company.
The grill may be great but the company sucks.
Respectfully upset
Customer Rating: Summary: good hibachi- nice size too Comment: The grill works great. The pre-seasoning didn't hold up too well when I cooked Korean barbeque on it. The sauce stuck on. I scrubbed it off, then re-seasoned it and it has worked fine since.
Customer Rating: Summary: This little grill is the best one we've ever had! Comment: Just got the Logic 410. You get great grill bars across burgers and dogs and nothing stuck to the grill. This little grill is all cast iron, it is beautifully designed and well made, easy to use and to clean. This little grill is the best one we've ever had!
Customer Rating: Summary: A good little grill....but is it right for you? Comment: I have been grilling with an indoor electric grill twice a week for two years. while it's very easy to grill and clean, the food never taste like grilled food. I wanted something better. I bought this grill three weeks ago based on the reviews here. I have grilled on it for a total of six times. I have found that it is not a perfect grill. None is.
What I like:
Built to last; its heavy and durable
made of cast iron--a material highly desired by grill pros
Very easy to assemble and use
a surprising large cooking area for such a small grill
charcoal-grilled foods are wonderfully delicious
being involved in the grilling process is fun
What I don't like:
cooks unevenly; the center gets hotter than the sides
uses a lot of coals due to the open design
cleaning the ash is a pain
While it's certainly a lot better than my electric grill at turning out delicious food, the open design makes it inefficient and limited. I have found that, because the heat escapes so rapidly, I need to burn about 50 briquets of the new Kingsford coal to grill six chicken breasts. Also, cleaning the ash afterward is no fun. There is no hole at the bottom of the grill for the ash to collect. I have to pick the rather heavy base up and turn it over to empty the ash out. Sometimes I get ash all over me. This open design also limit you to just grilling foods. Because there is no trapped heat (like in a kettle style grill), you can't roast or smoke your meat. I now know the the hibachi style grill isn't for me.
