Summary: Doing a great job on both slides and negatives
Comment: We bought this scanner to scan a rather massive number of color slides to digital format. It's doing a wonderful job so far. I wish it were configured to scan MORE than 4 slides at a time, but it is doing a good job. In college, I took a large number of 35mm pictures. The prints have faded considerably and I did not take care of the original negatives. So, I didn't have great hopes as I fed some of my negatives stacked in a shobox into the scanner. The enclosed software can be set to eliminate dust and scratches. You need to be careful about not using aggressive settings, but it has been doing an amazing job. Pictures look better than when they were printed at the photoshop 20 years ago. Keep in mind that scanning high quality slides and negatives is a slow process. So, be prepared to start your scan and then go do something else while it's scanning.

Comment: My CanoScan 8400f failed about six weeks after the warranty expired.
I contacted tech support and they were very polite and prompt, but we couldn't get it to work.
I took it to an authorized repair facility, but Canon doesn't repair these low-end scanners. If it's under warranty, they replace it. If it's past warranty, you're stuck. They offered me a 10% discount on a new one, but that's more than the Amazon price with no discount.
Thus, I am stuck with a big, shiny CanoScan doorstop. Bummer.

Comment: This is a very versatile scanner that does a great job with all types of media including film negatives and slides. Holders are provided that allow scanning up to twelve 35mm negatives, four 35mm mounted slides or a strip of 120 film. The CanoScan software provides convenience and full control over scanner functions.

Summary: Excellent scanner; easy install.
Comment: This scanner makes excellent resolution scans of prints and film. I've printed some of the photos I scanned with it on my little Canon Selphy CP510 and the print quality is really very good. I had to retouch some of the photos in Photoshop Elements because many of them had some dust and other marks on them. The scanner is super fast too and you can scan as many photos as you can fit on the glass plate. It will automatically crop them and make as many files as there are pictures. It seems that in the past some people had trouble getting the 8400F to work well in Windos XP. I've had no trouble using XP and scanning using the front buttons as well as acquiring from the computer works with no problems whatsoever.
