Customer Rating: Summary: Very Impressed Comment: I just receive my Canon 9950F Flatbed Scanner and the results are outstanding. I scanned some pictures and also some 35mm color negatives with awsume results. I might add that I also have the Canon i9900 Photo Printer, which adds to the fantastic pictures that it produces. I am just a novice and have not yet tried any of the advanced features of the Scanner or Printer. Out of the box, the results are great. Canon has a winner here !!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Not for you? Comment: This is a good scanner but it is only good for photo projects. Using this scanner for paper is unwise.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent scanner - easy to install and start scanning docs! Comment: This is an excellent scanner that is easy to setup and run. I was scanning old color slides along with black & white and color negatives from the 60's with excellent results within an hour of unpacking, so I think it is safe to say that installation and operation was easy.
The Adobe software that is bundled with the unit is powerful enough to rescue many 40 year plus old slides that were really faded. This was really nice to find, but the software is only a sample of an older version. Anyway I was impressed enough that I will be upgrading to the latest Adobe software soon.
My only complaints are:
First - a negative mask was not included for the old Kodak instamatic sized film. I am still working on a work around to let me do more than one negative at time, but I am sure it is there I just need to find it.
Second - The lack of a printed operating manual. I miss being able to kick back in my recliner and review the documentation while relaxing in my living room, but this was a problem with my previous HP 4470c scanner, too.
Overall, if you need to scan slides, negatives, or documents, this is an excellent machine that is well worth the money.
Customer Rating: Summary: Converted all our (12,000) negatives to digital! Yeah! Comment: We wanted to convert all our old negatives to digital so that we could share them with family as well as store them in more than one place for safety. It took me about a six weeks to scan in 12,000 negatives in my free time. The nice thing is that you can set up the scan and then walk away for 20 minutes or so before you need to reload. 20 minutes is for 16-20 negatives at 1200 dpi. I set mine to "medium" dust and scratch removal and it did a great job. I suggest you cut yourself some pieces of black paper the same width as the film. You can slip these in the slots next to the film to mask the light. We labeled some of the slips of paper "old" and "new" so when we were switching from one roll to the next we could remember what went where.
I did try to buy another negative holder from Canon, since it would have been nice to have one "loaded" while the other scanned. I had no luck doing so.
Online places ask 50 cents to a dollar to scan your negatives so I figure the scanner was a bargin. Now that we have finished scanning film we still have a nice flatbed scanner to use.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Flatbed Scanner Comment: This CanoScan 9950F recently replaced an HP 3C 9x14.5 legal flatbed which would be about 15 years old now. The HP still works (sometimes). Really hated to move away from the HP because it was built very well, before Carley F ran HP into the ground.
The 9950F is only 8.5x11 format however does a very good job even at low res settings. At 1200x1200 DPI it takes about 1 minute per 35mm color slide. The results are very very good. So, 12 slides will take 12 minutes. I have only done 35mm color slide so my experience with scans are from those and documents and printed color pictures.
I give this 9950F a high rating also as the Canon software works very nicely with paper port 10 pro. Canon gives you an entry level paper port software along with the CanoScan Toolbox 4.9 software drivers. I didn't like the entry level paper port so I used the pro version. The Canon drivers have enough custom settings to please most avid scan users. High 48 bit and hi-res setting will produce just over 100MB file size so, to get this setting to work you will need a powerful computer with plenty of memory and CPU. Today and with scans and digital photo's I'd say a minimum of 2GB of memory with at least a 3.0GHz cpu is fair game for friendly usage times.
No complaints about the power switch from me as it is easy to use, up front and handy. Canon place it just under the function buttons as to be handy but avoid accidental pressing it on or off. The power saving software controls the light, you can set it to stay warm from 1 minute on up and the scanner powers off after the light turns off. Only the blue indicator led remains on to let you know the scanner is powered on but in sleep mode.
I recommend this scanner for those who will prefer better digital scans with a great company behind it.
