Summary: Extremely overpriced for what you get
Comment: I tried all of Shure's in ear noise isolating headphones and was incredibly dissapointed. Especially since I use Shure microphones and turntable cartridges. I guess my expectations were a little too high. I use foam earplugs everyday at work, so I know there wasn't an issue of not wearing them properly. I also own and use varying headphones for studio work. My major complaint relates to other reviewers who talk about the lack of clean solid bass. I think it's funny how people try to make up excuses about the headphones shortcomings. Just because you paid over 200 dollars for a pair of so-so headphones doesn't mean the lack of bass is a user error. The Shure headphones were very accurate in the high frequency but a lot of the low end seemed to dissapear. The sound also lacked any real warmth. I would have to do a lot of adjusting with the EQ to get these headphones to reproduce great sound. I'm sure these are great for art music (classical), but those of us who enjoy wide ranges of music will be greatly dissapointed. It's also important to note that any good pair of speakers (headphones) are only as good as the audio unit driving them. You can buy a great set of speakers, but if your audio player doesn't have the power to drive them, they'll sound terrible. I'm sticking to my 40 dollar pair of Sony MDR EX71's. Great for mobile listening on the go.

Summary: Certainly not for movement
Comment: I purchased the Shure E4c earphones because of all the positive things I read on many sites. I guess they would be fine if you want to lie around on the couch with your player in your lap but they are horrible if you want to use them while walking, running or for any other type of exercise. They make a very annoying noise as the cable rubs on your cloths. If you are a runner you hear a rustling type of noise constantly with the movement of the cable. I am very upset that this would be even be an issue after all what is an mp3 player for if not to take on the go.

Summary: Good but not the best.
Comment: I'll be straight to the point. These earphones sound good but if you already own something better than the earphones they came with your iPod, you may be disappointed. I have three Sony headphones which are MDR V4, MDR V6 and MDR V600. For those who are not familiar with these headphones, they are over the ear, studio type headphones. They all offer a degree of external noise isolation through their foam cups. V4 has the smallest size and sits on ones ears and V6 and the V600 completely encircle ones ears. They all sound noticeably better than the Shure E4c but in my opinion V6 is the best sounding headphone among these. So, compared to MDR V6, Shure E4c is rather disappointing. The open, detailed sound and the deep clean bass of the V6 is missing on the E4c. Also, if you happen to own an iPod, get ready for more disappointment because E4c requires more power than what the iPod can deliver for strong, deep bass and produces a distorted sound under these conditions. My Arhos Jukebox has a stronger output stage so the E4c sounds very good with the Archos but the iPod is miserable. I tried various other iPods including the new 5th generation iPod Video, and the results were the same. iPods simply don't have strong enough output circuits to drive the E4c for deep bass. So far I haven't even discussed the price. Unfortunately, the sound quality of the E4c does not justify its price either. While the V6 is based on a 14 year old technology it is still my choice to listen to music at home. E4c is a good compromise for travel because it saves space, easy to carry and offers better sound isolation than the over the ear type headphones while delivering acceptable sound quality. Theoretically E5c would sound better with the iPods because according to their specs they are more sensitive. (E4c: Sensitivity at 1Khz = 109 dB SPL/mw with an impedance of 29 Ohm and E5c = 122 dB SPL/mW with an impedance of 110 Ohm). These specs are from Shure's website and tell me that E5c produces a lot more sound for the same amount of energy and also E5c has a lot higher impedance meaning that it puts fewer loads on your music player's driving circuit. Unfortunately I don't have an E5c to substantiate my theory. In summary, don't expect too much from these earphones and do experiment with the variety of the ear sleeves it comes with. I found out to my surprise that the best sound came from the foam sleeves. Also the sound quality is extremely dependent on a proper fit. Read the booklet and take time to experiment. I think the picture on the box shows the best way to wear them.

Summary: Throw the things away!
Comment: Now that I've got your attention throw the iPod headphones away! The reason being, there is an unwholesome tendency to crank up the volume of your device to compensate for the miserable sound resolution and outside noise. These Shure E4c things are the bomb! (You probably wouldn't hear one if it went off wearing these fantastic things). The E4c's allow you to isolate outside noise and mayhem; therefore, you may turn down the amplitude of the music to your inner ears thereby saving them.

These buds are mighty conveyors of aural confection! Another key to wearing these headphones is to make sure your ears are clean and free of debris (you know who you are!) Then make sure you place the correct bud into the proper ear (R =right, L=Left) and gently 'turn' the bud to 'seat' for comfort and maximum isolation and clarity.

I have learned that to ensure the truest high fidelity, record music to your iPod using the highest kilobit you possibly can. Remember, the emitted sound is only as good as the source.

Now that you have accomplished the aforementioned, Bam! the tunes are melodiously transferred to your tympanic membrane, and they do it flawlessly.

I have heard musical things (such as slight percussive elements, stereo imaging, and other nuances) via the E4c that I would otherwise have to crank my home stereo at intolerable volume to hear the same things. If you love music as I do these headphones are a must have!

The sensitivity of these headphones at 1kz is 109db (sound pressure level). This might not make sense to the average Joe but take my word; these headphones will rock your world! To illustrate what I mean by this parenthetical, turn your iPod to the lowest level while you are in a quiet place. Be amazed by the clarity of the sound at this level.

Added benefits are the gold plated miniature headphone plug, and extra plugs (it is possible to order more), and a great zip around carrying/protective case.

I will have to audition the E5c (If Shure would allow a comp pair--are you listening?) to give a comparison so stay tuned.

Summary: Worth the money?
Comment: Isolating:
The 'isolating' claim is no lie. I can max my volume and not have to worry about the person next to me hearing ANYTHING. On the flip side, having volume at medium and using the foam ear pieces, i can't hear anyone else in the office. Even using the rubber pieces, I can only sometimes hear muffled voices when someone's talking loud.

Sound Quality:
My old headphones we're cheapy's and these sound nothing like them. Much more crisp, clear, but less bass it seems like (which is odd considering the claims). I'll have to play with the settings, but overall they sound much better.

Worth the money? Yeah... I'd say so. But wait until they go on sale. (Buy.com had (or still has them) them for 170).

Editorial Reviews:

Digital edge technologies used for creating, transferring, and listening to digital music has made the iPod and various other Digital Media Players the most popular portable listening devices around the world. Shure recognized that at the start. Highly demanding and critical listeners have appreciated Shure earphones. Shure's E4c extends that enjoyment even further. The cutting-edge industrial design of the E4c is a breakthrough in sound isolating earphone technology. Ideal for the business traveler and on-the-go audiophile, the High-Definition Driver with Tuned Port Technology delivers brilliant highs and extended bass that enhance your listening experience with your portable DVD, MP3 and CD players as well as all other audio sources. The E4c's in ear design works like an earplug to block background noise naturally. This enables you to listen comfortably at lower volumes-even in loud environments. And unlike bulky headphones utilizing active noise cancellation technology, no artifacts are introduced into your listening experience. Sound isolating earphones are also much smaller and don't require batteries. 60 inch cable length 3.5 mm (1/8) gold-plated stereo plug Although the E4c comes with an assortment of sleeves to ensure a comfortable fit, some users may want something even more personalized. In this case, we recommend contacting a hearing professional, such as an audiologist, to make custom-fit ear molds for your E4c Color - WHITE
