Summary: Does what it does
Comment: Good use of a touch screen and very easy to follow directions. For the price, this is the right product. I'm more of a second wave of technology kind of person so The Garmin C340 is perfect-- I don't need the latest and greatest, just a solid product.

Comment: First, let me tell you that the best hands-on GPS unit you can have, if you want to see what best of best is, are the one's supplied with Acura/Honda. All the way around top end. Space shuttle stuff... Now, for our little friend the C340: It does the job. Very decent and effective unit. Garmin, however needs to sneek over to Bose or one of those manufacturers that has figured out how to put BIG sound in small compartments and take a few lessons. The voice command is just tooo low to be heard in a car blowing down the highway at 60 mph. Unfortunatly, its "visual rules" when navagating out on the freeways. You have to do a lot of glancing at the LCD to see whats going on. Which leads to the next issue. If the sun's out and its a bright day, that screen is lousy to read. Forget it. You can hardly see the damn thing. Even at full brightness, it just doesnt have the punch to be seen. Come on Garmin!! These are little things..Get them fixed and you've got a 1st rate unit. Other than the hear it and see it problems (which by the way, are only under certain conditions, noise and bright light) the C340 gets you there and back. It does fine. Does what its suppose to do. Just give it some balls in the sight and sound department. At the moment, I've been on the road from Seattle to Salt Lake City (and back) with the Garmin and giving it real time testing as I write. More later when I get back.

Ok, bottom line: Buy it. Like I said while on the road, it does the job. Additional observations; It made several locator errors while on the interstates. And these were not areas under construction or having BEEN under construction. Exit numbers were wrong four times in Utah, twice in Idaho, once in Washington. The street exit names were all correct however. As an example, we were 3 miles past exit 307 in Salt Lake before we realized there was no 307 and we had to do the uuuuueeee. We couldnt here the voice command screaming at us to turnaround because (as noted above) we couldnt hear it. As far as special locations like the search and find function for, say eating places..it worked OK, not perfect. In Pendleton Oregon, it (twice) sent us up into the high hills of an older residential area looking for a fast food joint.. First time for a burgermaster, second time for an Arbys on the return trip. As far as we could tell, neither existed anywhere in Pendleton. Fast food places generally aren't a real fair test because they come and go so quickly, especially in smaller but fast growing towns. We found that to be the case in Twin Falls, Idaho. That place is one giant shopping mall but several locations were not on the Garmin search library.
If you buy the 340, the first thing you notice is that it comes without any instruction book. Just one of those quick reference guides. Not that you really need a full on instruction book.. It's plug and play all the way, and I dont need some dopey, condecending "users guide" spending 5 pages in tiny print on how not to seriously injure or electrocute myself while plugging my Garmin into the cigerette lighter adapter. What you do need though, is a bit more comprehensive overview of the search functions so you dont have to sit and hammer buttons so much while learning how to use it. Good unit. Not perfect but hey, for the price you cant beat it. Garmin turns out good products and it looks like they really do try to improve as they go. Oh, one other thing.. For nine days we beat the living daylights out of this little piece of plastic with buttons and a screen in it. Dropped it a couple of times, went over gut jiggling roads with crap flying all over the car. Lots of "vibration test" opportunitys. Heat inside the car (Its black, inside and out) was in the 100's most of the time. The Garmin didnt quit. The only thing I have to deal with now is cleaning. Its filthy and grimy, and a bit sticky from a coke that sort of got half dumped on it. Road trips are like that.

Comment: Absolutely incredible piece of technology. For anyone who's never used a street GPS before, this will change the way you drive. Hollywood will have to stop making those lost-teen horror movies.
Pros:
Crystal clear screen - ok so it gets slightly hard to see in sunlight, but never once was I unable to see the words on the screen.
Text-to-speech synthesizer sounds very lifelike. Reads street names like a real person. The c330 model would say "Turn left in 500 ft." The c340 would say "Turn left on Main Street"
Distance to turn shown on bottom right at all times.
Tells you to bear left or right to exit highway. Always does this with enough time to change lanes. On an interstate, gives you .8 miles advance warning. On a street, gives you 200 ft. warning. Perfect timing.
Accurate to about 10 ft. of your actual location.
Imagine never having to look up your location in some crinkly paper map or go on Mapquest.com ahead of your trip.
Attractions/Points of Interest locator. If you need a restaurant, just pick the type of cuisine and it will tell you all the restaurants nearby in order of distance from your current location. Also shows the direction arrow so you don't choose one that makes you go back and further away from your destination.
Why buy a $2000 factory option when you can buy this portable unit which is 10x better and can be moved between cars?
Cons: They don't cost $19.99. And it's not hooked up to the steering and gas pedals to drive my car automatically. Other than that, it's the best money I ever spent on technology. I've done a ton of research before buying the c340 and it paid off. The next-generation c550 is probably better but also $200 more.

Summary: no computer software, can not up load trips to it
Comment: I found out the hard way that you can not up load maps or destinations from your home computer to this unit.
I bought Gamin 340 model, and then I bought way point trips (garmin) software program and no luck after communicating with Garmin this unit still it does not have the capability.
The unit works as well as can be expected with some signal loss in city locations.
But sometimes I need to customize my trip route, to avoid downtown New York City traffic and this unit thinks the fastest way to the Queens is straight thru New York city, I guess it has never driven in new york before..lol
