Customer Rating: Summary: Fun little toy Comment: First off, I really like my 2495 so far. I bought it to replace my ipaq 2215, which has been wonderful but eventually got banged up over years of serious use. I also wanted more storage space.
I'm a world famous author, in my own mind anyway, and I use my PDA's to write and edit stories. This is great for that, except that the Mobile Word doesn't save page numbers. I have to remember to insert them every time before I print. I also don't like the fonts that it comes with. You can install TrueType fonts, but first you have to find the Windows\fonts folder on the device. Mine was hidden, and it took a chat with HP customer service to figure this out. (He was very nice, by the way. My one experience with HP customer service turned out pretty well.)
I haven't had the battery problems related to ActiveSync yet that others have mentionesd, but I haven't set up the Wi-Fi yet either. That was a big concern. The little book that comes with the unit mentions how to fix the battery drain problem on page 34.
Windows Media is a little different on Windows Mobile 5 than on 2003. I think 2003 was a little easier, but so far I've been able to play my music, and it sounds great through the headphones. It's not bad through the speaker either, but you don't get stereo, and it's a little tinny.
I have ordered a thumbpad keyboard, but I don't have it yet. I used mine all the time on my 2215 and I wish they were interchangeable. Same with the extra battery. It's nice to have one when you're stuck in an airport for six hours. I just wish I could use the one from my other ipaq. At least the sync connector at the bottom is the same so I don't have to buy another auto charger.
This doesn't have Nevo, but I never used mine to remote control the TV anyway so I don't miss it.
All in all, it's a good machine. Solid 4 stars. If it were $150 less, I'd give it 5.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Product- but has just one quirk Comment: I upgraded to this unit after my hp 1910 fried. I loved the fact that it was wireless and bluetooth.
Like other posters, I was very frustrated about the battery drain problem. The battery would drain in a matter of hours- whereas my old ipaq would hold a charge for several days. I became almost afraid to carry it with me and I always kept it plugged into a source, something I am sure the hp people did not intend for this product.
The other frustrating thing was that I would have to perform a soft reset every time I turned it on, if it had been off for a time.
I was just about to return it, but decided to check out the 'forum' section of hp.com. I put in '2495' into the search, and found out that practically everyone who owned one was having this problem. It seems that the program 'ActiveSync' (which synchs the ipaq and the computer, is) is defaulted to look for a connection every few minutes even when the unit is off. This drains the battery at an alarming rate. Unfortunately, you can't change it unless you go into the program and add a dummy new server. It is a very easy process and takes a couple of seconds to do. I also unchecked the 'receive all incoming beams' box, and something for the Today screen.
Whatever I did seems to work, because now the unit is using power at a rate of my old ipaq! Now I am enjoying it, and can recommend it.
I do wish they would make a car charger that fits it though- I loved that about my old ipaq, and the car charger I have for it does not work with this model.
UPDATE: I found an easy solution to the car charger dilemma, as the power side of the car charger (once the adapter is removed) can be plugged into the cradle. Not very pretty, but it works and now I can charge my IPaq in the way to work- which is something I really liked about my old one. Other than that, I have now had my unit for a few months and am still loving it- I swear the processor lets me surf the net almost quicker than my computer. I also recently bought a bluetooth cell phone, and it was so easy to download my outlook phone directory into it using the bluetooth!
Customer Rating: Summary: HP or Windows Mobile? What's the Problem? Comment: This is my 2nd PPC; the first was a Dell Axim which I had for about 2.5 years. There were problems with the device which I always figured wad due to the first release of the MS Mobile software. I recently replaced the Axim with the HP HX2495 and I've had nothing but problems since. First the battery life is terrible. I'm not sure how long it last since I never really get to use the device due to all the lock-ups and resets (more on this later). The device for some reason seems to drain the battery even when it is not in use. I called HP and asked them about this problem and they blamed it on Windows CE 5.0 and said there is going to be a patch for the software available soon.
Resets - not sure why but the software is constantly locking up...this was a problem with my Axim but I would have thought Microsoft would have figured out how to fix this by now. Obviously I was mistaken. Be prepared to soft reset the device 4-5 times a day. Don't save anything in memory or you run the risk of losing it. I save everything on my SD card which keeps it from being deleted during a soft reset. Wi-Fi works sometimes. I have a wireless access router as part of my home network and was able to access it the first day I used the device. It's been unable to connect since then and I'm not sure why. I have other devices connected to the system and they are not having any problems so I figure it's the PPC. SD cards - having one inside the unit will keep it from powering up...found out the hard way that you have to eject the SD card to get the thing to come on sometimes...according to HP tech support that's also a problem with the Windows CE 5.0 and it will be corrected in the upcoming release.
Finally, on a final note - for the amount of money they want for these things you'd expect a better deal. This will be my last purchase of anything running Windows Mobile - it seems Microsoft is not interested in developing a stable OS for the PPC's and the manufactures of these devices are not entirely sure why they don't operate correctly. HF technical support tried to assist but they'll do anything to keep from giving you your money back. I purchased mine online directly from HP; if you purchase one get it from electronics store so if you don't like it you can simply return it without the hassle of dealing with the manufacturer.
Hope this review helps anyone who is even considering purchasing these types of devices. I have no love for Microsoft Mobile/Windows CE or whatever they'll try to re-package it as next week. My recommendation - stick to Palm products....they're not as advanced as the PPC's but they are definitely more reliable or save your money and buy a laptop.
Customer Rating: Summary: Upgraded from h1945--very pleased! Comment: I used an Ipaq h1945 with Pocket PC 2003 SE for almost two years before getting this model. The hx2495 has Windows Mobile 5.0 which has many improvements and enhancements over the previous version.
The persistent memory storage is a great improvement--better battery life because the RAM on previous models used power even when the unit was on standby. Also Wifi and Bluetooth features have worked flawlessly, allowing me to connect to the internet anywhere--work, home, even on-the-go with my bluetooth cellphone.
I will say this against WM5: There aren't many Pocket PC applications that are designed for this OS, so a lot of the apps I was used to with my previous Ipaq no longer work with this one. However, I've found that some programs not designed for WM5 will still work to some extent, if not fully on the new OS. I will, however, be looking forward to more applications moving toward WM5 in the near future.
Customer Rating: Summary: great tool Comment: This pocket pc is a great tool -- very compact but with a full feature set. I am writing this review on-line with my IPAQ.
I did experience the power drain problem, but that was because the system is preset to run synch in auto mode. Once I set synch to manual, which is my preference, all has been well.
I put a 1 gb SD card in it.
Overall this is a very nice computer.
