Customer Rating: Summary: I had hoped Amazon had corrected the problem, they have not. Comment: I read the other reviews and ordered the bike from Amazon anyway. Big mistake. The carton arrived today, May 24, 2006 torn open and damaged. Clearly, no attempt was made to properly package this item for shipping. I didn't even bother investigating the bike, I just left the heap on the steps and called Amazon (1-800-201-7575 in the US) for a return and to explain.
Now I will wait another 2 days for Amazon to send me a new one...I will keep you posted.
I'm really shocked that after so many complaints from so many people who have received this bike in bad condition, Amazon has done nothing at all to correct the problem.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great value, very comfortable, assembly instructions not good Comment: My doctor recommended a recumbent bike because it's easier on the knees than an upright model, which I'd been using for a while. My upright bike is a Schwinn, and I liked it for its extreme sturdiness (it's the same model I'd used at the physical therapists's). So the first brand I looked at was Schwinn. I have to confess that I didn't buy it from Amazon after hearing all the horror stories about torn cartons and missing parts through UPS; instead I bought the 213 from Sears. My husband and I tried out a number of bikes, and the Schwinn was by far the sturdiest in its price range. The other bikes we looked at were much flimsier, and we didn't think they'd hold up under our weight (my husband weighs almost 300 pounds, and I'm not small.) We never considered the Lifecyle; too expensive!
Everything people have said about the bad assembly instructions is true. Sometimes they're just dead wrong, or seem to be for a different model, but you can usually figure out what to do by looking at the diagrams. Most of the screws and bolts are blister-packed and clearly labeled as to what step they're used in, but the computer screws and the screws for the handlebar post are already attached, which caused me some trouble trying to find them. The instructions for where to lead the pulse wires running from the handlebars were opaque, to say the least, and we got them wrong. By the time we figured it out, it would have meant taking the entire machine apart to run them under and outside of the rear handlebars, so we just carefully taped them in place behind the seat. It took two of us about 2 1/2 hours to put the bike together, including time for dropping screws and swearing at the directions.
The machine itself is extremely comfortable and solid. It is virtually silent in operation, and,in general, is well designed. The computer has loads of programs designed to offer a varied ride with resistance adjustable from out-of-shape beginner to very fit people, and gives readouts for pulse rate, calories burned, rpm, miles ridden, and several other things. A couple of quibbles, though: the reading rack isn't big enough for most books, and the computer is very hard to read if the overhead light is on in the room. (If the angle of the display could be adjusted, it would have eliminated the latter problem.) The fan on the computer console is very cute, but absolutely useless at my height (5'7'').
I expect to get years of use from this machine, and it's a great value for the money. If the instructions had been better, I would have rated it 4 and a half stars.
Customer Rating: Summary: This bike is a nightmare Comment: DO NOT BUY THIS BIKE!
I bought it almost 2 months ago and it arrived in a damaged box. The assembly instructions were incorrect and many parts were missing. After multiple calls to Schwinn, and multiple promises that the parts would be shipped in a week,I am giving up. Amazon did agree to refunds my purchase price, but now I have to disassemble the bike and try to fit it back into the original damaged box. All together, I wasted hours on this bike. I will never buy another Schwinn product
Customer Rating: Summary: BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Comment: We have had our bike for three months and have never been able to use it. The bike was delivered and assembled. After about 30 minutes the computer started smoking. We called and a replacement part was ordered. It arrived 6 weeks later! The new computer was installed and it started to smoke. We have spoken to Nautilus three times and received no help. Amazon wants us to disassemble it and ship it back. The box it arrived in was in poor condition (torn in many places). Consequently the box was not saved. Needless to say we are extremely disappointed in the ways Nautilus and Amazon handled the situation.
