Customer Rating: Summary: Now you'll know where you're going and how to get there! Comment: Do you hate looking at maps or asking for directions? Now you'll never have to again. The Garmin is easy to use once you get used to it and after inputing your destination you don't really have to take your eyes off the road. Just be sure that you're not near tall buildings or tall trees when activating the unit. Gaining satellite access is really important to have it run properly. One thing you should do however, is have an address of your destination. It will save time wasted in scrolling through landmarks. The screen is small, but well lit for night driving. The best feature is that the unit talks you through all turns and changes in direction. It also shows your speed and the time of arrival at your destination. A bit pricey, but overall a great product.
Customer Rating: Summary: Add Me to the Thumbs Up List Comment: Like many other reviewers I was surprised by how small this unit was, but that's a good thing. That way it doesn't block your view out of the windshield. The screen is easy to see (if you can't see the screen clearly then maybe you shouldn't be driving because you might not be seeing traffic clearly, either), and the unit is easy to use - the menu is simple and quick. This is the only GPS I've used so I can't compare it to a touch screen but the scroll wheel works just fine.
Since I live in California I couldn't mount it on the windshield. I didn't want to use the dashboard attachment either since it is difficult to remove. So I ordered the dashboard flexible mount and while waiting for it to arrive, I kept the unit on the console of the car by the gear shift. Initially it took a long time (like 10 minutes) to acquire a satellite fix and I figured out that the closer you put it to the windshield, the sooner it finds the satellite. Once I received the three-finger flexible dash mount (which works very well by the way) and put the unit on my dashboard, it only took less than a minute to find the satellite.
Other comments: the voice is loud and clear (much clearer than my car radio which has your typical lower-midrange boost that tries to make people think it is hi-fi), and sounds natural. The unit itself seems very sturdy and is easy to use. The insturction manual is clear and easy to understand, although the more detailed one has to be downloaded from the Garmin website. I updated the POI's (points of interest) and also the software version by using the supplied CD and going to the website and the whole process was very easy, at least via Windows XP.
As for the route/directions, so far it hasn't steered me wrong (pun intended). For familiar routes I will depart from the stated directions since I know some streets have more traffic than others and it recalulates right away. All in all, this is a very worthwhile gadget and I am glad to have it. The only thing I would like it to have that it doesn't is to announce the street names but that's a more expensive unit. This one works fine. Very useful.
Customer Rating: Summary: the best of the bunch Comment: For this price range, you won't get a better GPS. If you're looking for an MP3 player or picture viewer, you should probably start looking at an iPod, but if you're interested in a GPS unit, this is easily the best in the $300 range.
I did quite a bit of research before I bought mine, and had doubts about it because of the small screen that wasn't even a touchscreen (all the other comparable models are touchscreen and most have MP3 players built in). However, once I got into my car and stuck it to my windshield, those doubts vanished.
The first thing is the unit is small and unobtrusive - something I was worried about with the other, larger units. The display is crystal clear and I had no problems seeing it during the daytime. From a speed perspective, it is very quick to map routes (the scrollwheel makes it very easy to enter information, as there is an autocomplete feature) and I made a few wrong turns on purpose, and it recalculated the route in less than 5 seconds.
This is a terrific unit, and I strongly recommend it!
Customer Rating: Summary: It works for me. Comment: Like many reviewers, I extensively researched before buying the unit. This is my third GPS; it is my first dedicated navigator box. It is refreshingly intuitive to operate. The thumbwheel/switch scroll-and-click operation works fine for me.
Even my spouse is impressed with its operation locally; but since I have not yet used it outside of my local area, I performed a controlled test. Here is a true scenario:
You're heading from Assateague Island, Maryland to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and want to avoid driving through Ocean City, Maryland. Your paper map lacks detail. You are on Route 17 near Selbyville, Delaware. Instead of highway names as on the map, all roads that seem to head in the correct direction have street names. Your spouse accuses you of being a lousy navigator, and you are lost.
The test:
I turned off the i5's GPS, found Selbyville, made it my start point, set Bethany Beach as my destination and reviewed all turns. Then I began the simulation (this is a wonderful feature!). The voice is great and easily understood. Double-checking by following on Windows Live Local, I watched as the Garmin found the route with ease. I am confident it would have worked live, in the field--er, on the road.
This little goodie has much "bang" for the price; I purchased the Garmin 3-point friction mount and have it setting on a sticky pad on my dash, because it was walking slightly without the pad. Since Garmin warns against leaving it in a car, the quick disconnect on the mount makes it easier than releasing the suction cup and resecuring it.
I think navigating would sometimes be tricky, depending upon what the set preferences were. The bottom line is, so far it works for me.
Customer Rating: Summary: Let me make the rating easy to understand Comment: Received box at work
Took box to lunch
Opened box in car
Plugged in cigarette adapter
Turned on
Waited 3 minutes for satellite location
Done
When I opened it I couldn't believe how small it was, BUT, once it was working I realized it didn't need to be any larger because you can adjust the view easily. Search functions were easy. What I really like about it is that it's so small you can easily detach it from one car and put it in the other one. And, the fact that it is small doesn't cloud the fact that the voice on the unit is very LOUD, but has 5 settings for those sensitive ears. I recommend attaching it to the windshield, which works nicely with the suction cup and, being small, doesn't get in the way of your line of sight. I've read where attaching it to the dashboard and then trying to remove it will rip your dashboard. The window mount is great because you can move the mount from car to car as well.
I'm thinking about giving them out as gifts...well maybe one.
