Customer Rating: Summary: Best earbuds in this price range? Comment: I just received my Sony 51's today and I may be prematurely jubilating, but they sound great (both bass and treble) and stay in my ears. And they do a good job of blocking outside noise which means I can lower the volume and save my eardrums. I paid $19.99 and would be hard pressed to find a better buy in that price range.
I actually like the different cord lengths for the ears. One side is only 6" long. I run the main cord between my shoulder blades. If someone walks up to talk, I remove both earbuds and hang them around my neck like a doctor stethoscope. What I can't figure out is why the earbuds are marked L and R, since they are the same shape.
If the cords start to fray as others state, I'll post an update...
Customer Rating: Summary: Awesome for the Price Comment: I havent had any of the problems that the rest of the people have had. MY wires look fine, and they even stay in on a motorcycle...up to 80ish mph. In the helmet they are fine at any speed. The sound is incomperable to the crappy buds that apple give you with the ipod. SOOO much better.
Customer Rating: Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT Comment: The sound from these headphones is reasonably good, but what's the use of that if the "rubber" on the wires starts disintegrating after 4 months? The other reviewers who have commented on this are absolutely right. I have never seen this happen to ANY product I own, let alone a pair of headphones. I would understand if they were called "Sony MDR-EX51LP Disposable Headphones", because that's what they ARE.
After using the headphones infrequently for 4 months, I noticed little random holes in the coating. Now, after a total of 6 months of owning the product, I can see the wiring underneath and big chunks of the coating are falling away.
Conveniently, the warranty is only for THREE months. I called Sony Customer Service, and the woman there ("Val"), said that it's "WAY PAST" the warranty period and I would need to pay $26 to have the thing replaced. HA! I asked her if she herself would be disappointed if she purchased a pair of Sony headphones and they became unusable after 6 months. She hemmed and hawed and finally said, "I have to consider the warranty in these cases. If it's only a 3 month warranty, then, NO, I wouldn't be disappointed at all."
That's great. Well there you have it ... customer-centric service from the Rootkitters themselves. STAY AWAY from these headphones, and from Sony in general.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good. Comment: Well, I've never had shures or any other high-end earbuds (even though I am quite picky about noise), but these are pretty awesome.
As a freshman in high school, I bought a pair of panasonics at Best Buy - and they got stolen the next day, along with my mp3 player.
So I got my dad's mp3 player, and the headphones that came with them (which I hated) died, so I was looking for a pair of new headphones and came upon these in Best Buy. Using these weird Best Buy dollar things, I got $30 dollars off and bought them for 10 dollars (40 normally).
Well, they're much better than the panasonics I bought. I like the bass, and I like the highs, but the mids aren't so great. I haven't had any problems with the cord breaking (yet), and I like the design with one end longer than the other, just stick the music player thing into your left pocket.
The case that comes with it is handy in many ways. Just clip it onto the wire, and use it however you want. Personally, I used it to put my earbuds into so I wouldn't lose the tiny earpieces. I read about using them as a cord shortener in one of the reviews. For those who are complaining about the length of the cord, I tried it and it works really well.
Well, I really like these headphones - and the small ones fit my ears perfectly.. but I lost one of them when putting it on in the car, so I'm off to go find it, wish me luck.
These are good for someone who is looking for closed-ear headphones without paying ALOT for them.
Note: If you don't get massive savings, buy them on Amazon. 20 bucks is a steal.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not very good Comment: Tried these out at the local Sony store. Even with the largest size fitting, these earphones suffered from very poor isolation. The sound qulity was abysmal, and the earphones are not sensitive.

These Sony headphones feature a closed-type design which reduces outside noise for high-intensity listening. The Sony Fontopia design also helps to generate resonant bass response. The lightweight, in-the-ear design provides a snug, comfortable fit inside the ear. Super-small 9 mm drivers, and soft silicon earbuds provide futher quality and comfort. Two sizes of earbuds are included. What's in the Box Headphones, compact case and optional earbuds.
